From lifeguards to town planners: Wirral pupils look beyond the council desk

· Wirral Mug Printing editorial

A practical careers day in Birkenhead gave local pupils a different view of the people keeping a borough running.

Ask a teenager what a council does and a swimming pool may not be the first answer. A Wirral work-experience event brought that wider picture into focus, introducing local pupils to careers across Leisure, Trading Standards and Regeneration through practical activities.

Students from Clare Mount Specialist Sports College, St Anselm’s College and The Mosslands School took part at the Mallory Building and Europa Pools Leisure Centre. Rather than treating work experience as a single placement, the council described a more flexible approach that builds skills and confidence over time.

The sessions also connected familiar local questions with the jobs behind them: why roadworks happen, how enforcement protects shoppers, and what a career in sport can involve. Apprenticeship and university routes both featured, alongside roles where skills are in short supply.

For local employers planning their own school visit, there is a useful idea here: show one real task and the person who does it. For schools interested in the council programme itself, the official announcement gives the contact for future opportunities.

See the official account for school enquiries. The careers event has already taken place.
